I ate a nectarine this year in mid-Spring and noticed some itchiness in my throat. Followed, and can you believe it, by a mild sensation that my throat was starting to close up. At the time, I wheezed and coughed a little until I could breathe again— and then thought nothing of it for several months. It wasn’t until I was at Mary’s house a few weeks ago eating some fresh local in-season cherries that I realized it was happening again. Shit, maybe I am allergic to stone fruits.
What. the. fuck. Who develops a stone fruit allergy at 24??? Me. Apparently.
I have yet to test out whether my new allergy extends to mangos because if it does, this is sure to be a sign of my anticipated, but inevitable demise. I just never thought it would come this soon.
This is all to say, friends, that in life there are no guarantees. There is nothing you can take for granted. Especially not your immune system and lack of allergies.
If you are able to eat stone fruits— please, for the love of God, eat as many peaches, nectarines, plums, cherries, apricots, dates and mangoes as you can. Before it is too late!!
Happy snacking summer babies x
